Beginning this May, Sheridan is set to welcome visiting groups of apprentices from the Denso Technical Skills Academy of Japan, who wish to learn more about Sheridan’s’ skilled trades curriculum and facilities.
Alan Reid, Associate Dean School of Skilled Trades and Craig Brazil, Coordinator for the Machining, Tooling & Millwright Programs recently welcomed Principal Matsui and Project Manager Mr. Okazaki from the Denso Technical Skills Academy to Sheridan’s Skills Training Centre (STC). The purpose of their visit was to explore the possibility of developing a relationship with Sheridan.
The Denso Technical Skills Academy trains approximately 230 skilled workers per year in a variety of trades, from Tool & Die to Mechatronics, for the Denso Corporation’s many wide and varied working divisions. Denso Corporation is a global supplier of powertrain control, electronic and thermal systems for the automotive industry.
For the last number of years, about 135 Denso apprentices have embarked on an extended international field trip to experience different countries and cultures in the world at large and see other educational and skills training institutions like theirs.
Principal Matsui and Mr. Okazaki participated in-depth discussions and a tour of the Skills Training facility, where Alan and Craig explained how the Ontario Ministry curriculum is integrated into both our theoretical and practical classes through a variety of in class instruction methods and hands-on practical projects in the Skills Training Centre shops and labs.
At the completion of the meeting, an agreement was reached that will see, beginning this May, the Sheridan Skills Training Centre welcome about 135 Denso apprentices in three separate groups (Group 1 in May, Group 2 in October and Group 3 in November). Each group of Denso apprentices will spend 9 days in Ontario based at the University of Guelph. They will spend one half-day at the Skills Training Center visiting the Machine Shop/s, CNC Lab, Stamping Press Shop, Industrial Mechanic Millwright Lab, Welding Shop and the Electrical and Plumbing Labs, observing each of the classes in progress, after which they will also have the opportunity to converse with the apprentices and post-secondary students in these different programs at Sheridan and share their experiences.
