From from June 5-8th, Moncton, New Brunswick welcomed over 500 competitors in 40 different trade and technology skills competition areas for the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition. The event, which is open to the public over the two days of the competition also had an Exhibit/Career Zone with 40 Try-A-Trade and Technology activities. 60 of Canada’s top employers, associations, labour groups, training institutes and government partners were on site to show how the technology and skilled trades integrate into our daily lives.
Sheridan had two apprentices who were part of Team Ontario for this years competition.
Kacper Lasecki, a 3rd year Tool & Die apprentice, participated in the Precision Machining contest. Peter Mario Giarrizzo, a 1st year Industrial Mechanic Millwright apprentice, took part in the Industrial Mechanic Millwright (IMM) competition.
Both Kacper and Peter had tough competition from across the country with 10 participants in their competitions.
For Kacper, each day of the competition comprised of a different challenge, day one on the lathe and day two on the milling machine, each challenge used different material — the lathe was brass and the milling machine was aluminum. Kacper performed very well over both days and in a very closely fought contest finished in 3rd place winning the Bronze medal. In Kacper’s competition the margins for error are tiny, with the tolerances the competitors are expected to keep are +/- 0.001” or less than 1/3 the thickness of a human hair.

Peter Mario Giarrizzo won 4th place in the IMM competition.
Peter also performed very well over the two days of his competition. In the Industrial Mechanic Millwright competition, there were a number of challenges that included MIG welding, fabrication, machining, hand fitting of parts, mechanical assembly, shaft alignment and the installation of a variety of machine parts that allowed a small machine to run. This year’s competition was also the first official selection competition for the Worldskills competition in Abu Dhabi in October 2017. Peter missed out on a medal by .75 of one mark, and 1st to 4th place separated by only 12 marks after two days and 15hrs of competition.
“The standard of competitor and the quality of their work was the best I have seen in the eight years I have been involved with the National competition” said Craig Brazil, National Technical Chair for the IMM competition and Sheridan College.
