Starting next week on Tuesday, October 11, IT will encrypt all Sheridan owned or leased Windows 7 laptops that support encryption using Microsoft BitLocker Administration (MBAM). This will protect data on employee laptops in the event the device is lost or stolen and will have no noticeable impact to your day-to-day activities or your laptop’s performance.

On or After Tuesday, October 11, please do the following:

  1. Reboot your laptop and log-in while connected to the Sheridan network via a wired connection.
  2. Within a few hours, if your laptop supports encryption*, you will see a prompt to begin the encryption process on drive C:. We recommend you connect to AC power at this point. Note that you can postpone the start of the encryption process for 24 hours.
  3. You will not be automatically prompted to encrypt drive D:. Right click the drive D: icon and select “Turn on BitLocker…” to encrypt this drive.

You will still be able to use your laptop while encryption runs in the background. Please take a look at the Laptop Encryption Instructions for more details, including screen shots showing you what to expect.

* If you don’t see the prompt to begin encryption, it is likely your laptop does not support it. At Sheridan, there are laptops running a variety of software images, due to when they were acquired. As such, certain laptops do not support MBAM in their current state. IT will continue to work on rolling out encryption to these laptops.
