As part of the Mission Zero initiative, Sheridan has implemented the Zero Waste program across the campus. We aim to meet our ambitious targets and become a zero waste campus by 2020.
Thanks to the participation of the Sheridan community, we have reduced our waste to landfills by 606 tons (44%) over the last three years. The overall diversion rate has increased from 13.5% in 2013 to 51.9% in 2016. We will need your help to continue our waste reduction and diversion efforts this year.
To our new employees who just joined Sheridan and those who have recently moved to new offices, below is some quick info for your reference on how to sort waste in the office areas:
- For full-time employees, you are provided with two waste containers (blue recycling bin and black landfill bin) under your desk. You are responsible for emptying the waste from these two containers into the Zero Waste Stations located at the common areas in your office, such as kitchenettes/print rooms. With each of us responsible for sorting our own waste into the centrally located Zero Waste (ZW) stations, we will be reminded how much garbage we produce and encouraged to use fewer disposables.
- For those of you who are sharing your office desk with other employees (e.g. part-time), please put your waste directly into the ZW stations.
- Each centrally located ZW Station includes three waste collection bins — Organics (green), Mixed Recycling (blue) and Landfill (black) which are being emptied by Sheridan’s cleaning staff daily.
- Please bring any food/organic waste you have to the ZW green bin. The green bin, along with the blue recycling bin and the black landfill bin, are being emptied daily by cleaning staff to prevent food smells and pests.
- The waste sorting system at Sheridan is unique. The green (or Organics) bin at each Zero Waste station accepts not just food waste and paper napkins, but also the paper coffee cup and paper plates. The waste materials collected in the green bin are being delivered to an anaerobic digestion plant where the waste is turned into electricity and fertilizers.
