The next Mathematics Community of Practice session will be held on Wednesday March 22, from 2:00-3:30 pm at the Davis campus Room H 153. Updates from the Sheridan College and broader Mathematics communities will be shared. These include updates from the Ontario College Math Test (former CSAP) steering committee, the Ontario Colleges Mathematics Council (OCMC), American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), the Ontario Colleges Mathematics Association (OCMA), the Ontario Association of Math Educators (OAME) and Fields Institute Mathematics Education Program.

We are also having two Sheridan College Faculty presentations:

Jessica Pulis, Sheridan College Professor and Program Coordinator, General Arts & Science & Pre Health Sciences, will share details of her experience in assessing, remediating and re-assessing the mathematics skills of students in the pre-health program, following up on the work initiated by Sherri Steele.

Sean Saunders, Sheridan College Professor in the Faculty of Human & Social Sciences will share his work on Creativity and Mathematics.

Here is a brief summary of his presentation.

Have you ever wondered why your students can’t seem to find the same enjoyment in mathematics as you do?  If math is a language, has math education been so focused on the grammar and syntax rules of algebra that we’ve forgotten to expose students to the discipline’s “literature”?  Or, in an effort to “make math practical”, are we asking them to analyze it to death, solving problems concocted in a vacuum? The discipline of mathematics is inherently rich in artistic allure, philosophical profundity, innovative ideas, sordid stories, peculiar paradoxes and radical results.  Come and explore the beauty and intrigue of some of these lesser-known aspects of math, and discover ways to infuse this into, as well as extract this out of, the lessons you’re already teaching in your classrooms!

Teleconferencing for those who cannot attend in person will be available.
