On May 6, 2017, the Sheridan College Women in Business Committee hosted their first event, Young Women in Business Day, in partnership with the Pilon School of Business (PSB), Enactus Sheridan and Girl Guides of Canada. Over 150 Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers from the ages of 7-17 were in attendance. The event was developed by PSB student leader Ming Smith, an active leader with the Girl Guides of Canada and the founder of the Sheridan College Women in Business Committee, and executed by her team with the support of faculty member Angela Flowerday and the Pilon School of Business.
The goal of the event was to empower and support these young girls through the power of education. The event incorporated an array of fun and engaging activities for the girls to participate in. The Honourable Iqra Khalid, Member of Parliament for Mississauga – Erin Mills, delivered an empowering keynote for attendees focused on taking leadership roles and exploring all the opportunities available. The workshops held throughout the day were delivered by student volunteers, and explored the fundamentals of various business topics including marketing, stocks, and human resources. They were tailored to the different age groups, so the girls could apply this knowledge in their day-to-day lives.
In the most memorable moment of the day, MP Khalid read a letter from the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. The letter acknowledged the hard work of the Sheridan College Women in Business Committee, as well as the importance of empowering youth, particularly young women.
