Garden season officially opened on Wednesday May 24 at Trafalgar, as staff, students and faculty came out to get their hands dirty and kick off the growing season. Participants ranged from highly experienced gardeners to first timers, which helped foster collaboration and a great teaching and learning opportunity.

Students and Student Affairs staff on planting day
With over 50 participants, the garden has been divided into 12 garden plots. Each participant is member of a group and each group is responsible for their own plot. Each group is invited to be creative in how they plan, decorate and use the space. Many gardens have installed team signage, plant labels and some have even brought in their own fencing to help protect against any wild life (we don’t want the garden to become a salad bar for our local rabbits!). Participants planted seeds, brought their own seedlings, used seedlings grown on campus or bought plants from a nursery.
The garden (designed by Nathan Nettleton) consists of garden plots surrounding a circular pollinator patch which is designed to encourage and support pollinators (bees, butterflies, beetles and other beneficial insects) to the garden. On-site water access has now been installed to allow participants easy access to ensure consistent watering. Next steps: as seedlings start to come up, participants will begin to thin the seedlings, stake the climbers (beans, peas etc.) and hope for good growing weather!
One of the main goals of the garden is to help bring members of the Sheridan. Over the last few weeks, it has been wonderful to see students, staff and other members of the community stop by to explore, discuss and enjoy the space. We encourage passerby’s to stop by, relax, and discover in the garden.
