Staff from the International Centre as well as Student Affairs, the Office of the Registrar, and several other agencies gathered on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, for the first annual Sheridan International Professional Day. Sheridan’s Dean, International, Mike Allcott welcomed the colleagues and introduced the day as an affirmation of the diversity of cultural values, knowledge, experience, and perspectives that make the Sheridan community an outstanding place to learn and work. The day also afforded a vision of the future of “holistic internationalization” at Sheridan.
Participants engaged in sessions to share knowledge about international student services as well as recruitment, admissions and enrolment process for people from around the world; cross-cultural communication; and how we collaborate with colleagues to benefit the staff and student experience at Sheridan as a whole. Toronto’s award-winning ChocoSol Traders encouraged an intercultural dialogue promoting ecologically and socially just food systems through cacao, coffee, maize and conviviality
Rann Sharma, Global Head of People Operations and Culture at WE charities (formerly Free the Children), was the empowering keynote speaker. Rann shared her perspective of personal and professional development, growing up in the GTA, attending college and university, and being a part of WE. As a part of the leadership team, she has seen WE grow from a small group of dedicated idealists to a worldwide organization with more than 600 employees. Through that dramatic growth, she has ensured that WE has maintained a distinct organizational culture based in the values of global citizenship and social justice.
The day closed with a “Chocolatada” on the patio of the Conference Centre, hosted by ChocoSol who offered the gathering a perspective on building a successful enterprise based on cultural values.
The International Centre would like to express their sincerest gratitude to all session presenters and everyone who joined in and participated: It was wonderful to see our Sheridan community come together to learn, exchange ideas and build stronger professional connections through cultural dialogue.
