When: Wednesday, January 24 | 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Where: Auditorium, Mississauga Central Library, 301 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W.
Sheridan’s Film For Thought series invites you to a screening of the highly acclaimed historical drama Denial to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Denial dramatizes the legal battle between historian Deborah Lipstadt and notorious Holocaust denier David Irving. After Lipstadt spoke out against Irving for his falsification of history, he sued her for libel. In the English legal system, the burden of proof is on the defendant, which meant Lipstadt and her legal team had to prove the essential truth of the Holocaust during the trial. Denial recounts their fight for historical truth and uncovers the motives and tactics of the Holocaust denial movement.
“Freedom of speech means you can say whatever you want. What you can’t do is lie and expect not to be held accountable for it. Not all opinions are equal. And some things happened, just like we say they do.” – Deborah Lipstadt in Denial.
The Guardian called Denial an “overwhelmingly relevant assertion of truth” and a “breath of fresh air.” We hope you can join us for the screening and for a discussion of the trial’s significance and the continued threat posed by Holocaust deniers in an era of “alternative facts.”
