Thanks to the significant efforts of STC staff, faculty and students, Sheridan’s first ever Skilled Trades Competition was a resounding success, with a palpable energy and excitement filling the Skilled Trades Centre.

Serving as a precursor to the annual Skills Ontario competition, the March 28th Skilled Trades Competition was Sheridan’s first experience delivering an in-house, qualifier-style skills competition. Students competed in the Industrial Mechanic Millwright, Precision Machining, Plumbing, Electrical and Welding categories. The competition provided an opportunity for students to showcase their mastery and compete against peers to earn the chance to participate at Skills Ontario.

Skills Ontario, with over 2,300 competitors and 69 skilled trades and technology-based competitions, draws an anticipated 30,000 spectators from elementary and postsecondary schools across the province, as well as many industry representatives. It’s not only a showcase for the competitors to demonstrate they’re the best in their craft, but an opportunity to earn the chance to progress to the Skills Canada National Competition, vying to place against contenders from across Canada. Winners of the Skills Canada competition then move on to the WorldSkills competition, a notable and prestigious honour.

In Skills Ontario fashion, winners of the Sheridan Skilled Trades Competition were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals, made by Sheridan’s skilled trades faculty, and many industry partners contributed gifts for competition winners.
