Davis Campus Repair Café

Repair cafe volunteersVolunteer fixers from the student body, faculty and outside of the college joined forces last Thursday afternoon, to help their community at the Davis Campus Repair Café.

It is an event that fosters community togetherness through the free repairing of broken household items and sharing of knowledge between volunteers and guests. The event also helps avoid any unnecessary toxic waste spreading to the environment.

“In my opinion, the largest impact lays in the service it does for the community. It’s the lessons we’re teaching, the hope we’re building within the community that in this modern world, we still have some say in the lifetime of our products.”

About 11 items were fixed on the day, ranging from laptops to coffeemakers, table lamps to cell phones.

These events can be very important for young students who may not be able to afford professional repair work during the school year.

“One of my friends told me that she was in the library and her computer shut off while doing an assignment. For the school to have people come in who know how to fix things like computers and give tips to students is very, very useful for situations like that.  I wish I had this service when I was in school!” Repair Café guest, Brian Artwell said.

Thanks to all of the volunteers who came out to support their community and the guests who came in with their broken items. Thanks also  to our partners the SSU, Repair Café Toronto and the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies (CAMDT) for their 3D printing demonstration.

Our next Repair Café will take place April 7, off-campus at the Chinguacousy Branch Library, in Brampton.  We invite any and everybody to come out, enjoy some coffee or tea and get your items fixed. We can’t wait to see you there!
