On April 6th, Sheridan’s Centre for Mobile Innovation (CMI) Director, Dr. Ed Sykes and Mobile Computing Program Coordinator and Principle Investigator Magdin Stoica, participated in the inaugural Immersive Reality Think Tank hosted by Microsoft and the Collaborative Human ImmerSive Interaction Lab, CHISIL.
It was an evening of ideation and a meeting of the minds around the disruptive opportunities for improving healthcare outcomes for patients and healthcare professionals using mixed reality and cognitive computing to create immersive, intelligence-infused experiences. The think-tank round-table was a great start for the Realities in Medicine Conference.
On the April 7th & 8th weekend, the CMI research team, Magdin Stoica, Ed Sykes and their Mobile Computing student researchers, Anh Nguyen, Mitch Emery and Mark Beauchamp presented their work at the Realities in Medicine Conference.
The CMI display showcased the “Clinic of the Future” (a.k.a. CCX), a Sheridan CMI applied research project conducted in collaboration with CloudDX. The project provided a glimpse of the future of healthcare fueled by mixed reality, cognitive computing and a universal integrated experience that is immersive for medical practitioners, efficient for healthcare institutions and personalized and compassionate for patients and their caregivers.
At the heart of the CCX system is the Cloud DX’s Vitaliti Wearable, an innovative medical device that can detect and deliver unprecedented clinical grade vitals and cognitive cloud diagnostics services developed by CloudDX. CloudDX is a progressive bio-medical company, co-founded by Dr. Sonny Kohli, MD FRCPC Internal Medicine/Critical Care, Oakville Hospital, Assistant Clinic Prof (adjunct), McMaster University, Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer and Cloud DX 2017 XPRIZE recipient for ‘Bold, Epic Innovation’.
The Realities in Medicine Conference was the first Canadian scientific conference in AR/VR/MR focused on the research around mixed realities in medicine. Through conferences like these, healthcare professionals, medical educators and clinical researchers connect with developers and the virtual, augmented and mixed reality industry to look at uses, evidence and best practices for the development of virtual, augmented reality for patient care, medical education and research.
‘Your collective work and partnership in this space is truly appreciated! Thank you Magdin Stoica, Edward Sykes and all the students involved in the great work you do each day! We are incredibly impressed!!’ said Michael Thibodeau, HoloLens & Mixed Reality Lead at Microsoft Canada, who invited the CMI team to participate at the conference.
The Sheridan CMI team would like to thank our CloudDX partners, Dr. Sonny Kohli, Sara Ross-Howe, Senior Data Scientist and Dr. David Widman and Michael Thibodeau of Microsoft Canada for their collaboration and for this incredible opportunity.
