The Ontario Robotics Championship combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. High school students from across Ontario showcased their design and engineering skills, and competed in Canada’s largest high school robotics event at the FIRST® Robotics Competition District Championship in partnership with the City of Mississauga.
The Hershey Centre hosted a fleet of the most advanced intelligent robots and robotics teams from across Ontario. With strict rules and limited resources, the teams have raised funds, designed a team brand, honed teamwork skills, and built and programmed robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.
Sheridan College’s involvement was to provide much needed personnel, technical and machining support with machine shop tools and tooling to assist the teams in making modifications and/or repairs to their robots over the three days of competition. Roman Motyka, Metal Cutting Trades Senior Technologist and Steve Schenk, Metal Cutting faculty member, provided the technical and machining expertise required by the various teams. Both Roman and Steve were very impressed by the enthusiasm, creativity and designs of the robots. “The tolerances and the complexity of the units this year is the best we have ever seen,” said Roman and Steve.
