Community Garden 1

Have you visited the Trafalgar Community Garden lately? We have a new art installation!

We are extremely proud and excited to announce the completion of a new mural that showcases the exemplary talents of Sheridan student, Meghan Grayson. In a wonderful display of student talent and collaboration, the mural, which was designed, painted and completed by Meghan, is on the two outward facing walls of the garden shed (which was also a student-created project installed by students from the Skills Training Centre two years ago). We encourage you to stop by and appreciate the details and beauty of the mural. It showcases the growing lifecycle of the garden including seeding, vegetation above and below the soil, pollinators, and the importance of pollinators, worms, sunshine and rain. We are so happy with how the mural has helped beautify the community and wildflower garden area at Trafalgar. Meghan Grayson is currently completing her Co-op and will be entering her fourth year of the Honours Bachelor of Animation program in September. She is also a gardener with the Community Garden.

Community Garden 2

This is our 3rd year growing at Sheridan’s Trafalgar Campus, and we are seeing an incredible transformation of the surrounding area. Before the garden was created, the area was mostly grass that was struggling to survive. Today it has been transformed to a vibrant, colourful and diverse ecosystem. The soil is starting to show signs of life with worms and other critters settling in, and, thanks to the garden’s proximity to the wildflower garden, we are starting to see an increase of pollinator insects, bees and butterflies moving into the area.

Compared to the first year (with only five gardeners), we have seen exciting growth of interest in the community garden on campus. This year we have over 45 garden participants who are tending 10 garden plots. There is lots of variety in the garden this year including tomatoes, kale, tomatillos, honeydew melon, lettuce, beets, daikon radish, peppers and more!

Now is an excellent time to browse and observe all of the produce that is being grown, catch a glimpse of bees hard at work, appreciate the beautiful mural or and just relax and appreciate what nature has to offer. Just remember the garden is for your viewing pleasure, please no sampling. The bounty is to be enjoyed by the gardeners who have signed up and are tending a plot. If you’re interested in participating next year, keep an eye out for the call for gardeners in early 2019.

Sheridan’s Community Garden is located between A-wing and Athletics. For more information about the community garden, please contact communitygarden@sheridancollege.ca or visit http://missionzero.sheridancollege.ca/get-involved/community-garden/.
