As the new school year starts, you may be placing or hanging art, banners and decorations in your work space. Please consider the following safety tips when doing so:

  • Do not place or hang any items that could impede access to emergency equipment (e.g. block fire extinguishers, pull stations, fire hose cabinets, exit signs, eyewash/shower stations, etc.) or restrict egress.
  • Ensure items placed do not create a tripping hazard or accessibility issues.
  • Do not stand on chairs, desks, boxes, etc. to gain additional height.
  • If use of a ladder is required, the work MUST be completed by a competent person (e.g. Facilities Services staff or those who completed proper training and have access to appropriate equipment) and the area must be secured. OHS Services can provide consultation and ladder safety training.
  • Check to see if the wall or floor that may be impacted from placing the items contains asbestos. A list of areas that have asbestos-containing building materials can be found here.
  • Ensure the wall and device used to hang items are appropriate for its size, shape and weight. Please contact Facilities Services for guidance (Trafalgar: fmdsktra@sheridancollege.ca or ext. 2255; Davis and HMC: fmdskdav@sheridancollege.ca or ext. 5210).

If you have any questions, please contact ohsservices@sheridancollege.ca or ext. 2515. Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Occupational Health and Safety Services
