Student Affairs is pleased to announce that the Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Hub is established and the team is working on a variety of initiatives to enhance WIL at Sheridan!
As defined by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL), WIL is a model and process of curricular experiential education, which formally and intentionally integrates a student’s academic studies within a workplace or practice setting. WIL at Sheridan refers to curricular activities such as apprenticeship, clinical placement or practicum, co-op work term, field placement, and degree internship.
As noted in the following diagram provided by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, WIL is a component of the broader term experiential learning (EL):
As noted in Sheridan’s Academic Plan, we want to ensure that every student has access to experiential education. By participating in WIL/EL activities, students gain workplace competencies and better prepare for future employment opportunities.
Over the next eight months, the WIL Hub will be working with key stakeholders to develop a framework for WIL at Sheridan and a framework for enhancing relationships with employers/community partners.
The WIL Hub is also working with internal partners on additional projects to:
- Create an inventory of WIL and EL activities at Sheridan
- Develop a Community of Practice for WIL practitioners
- Share resources and best practices to promote excellence and mitigate risk
- Advance international experiential learning opportunities
- Leverage technology to support the delivery of WIL and EL experiences for our students
- Build and strengthen Sheridan’s relationships with employers and community partners
