For far too long, those who have experienced gender-based violence have suffered in silence. The time for action is now. As part of our continuing efforts to eliminate sexual assault, gender-based violence and discrimination, various departments across Sheridan have joined together again this year to host a series of events.

You can help us advocate for change and create opportunities for critical dialogue by getting involved either in-person or online. All members of the Sheridan community are invited to participate in the following events:

16 Days of Activism
Ongoing until December 10
In support of the United Nations’ annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Social Service Worker Program’s student-led Social Justice & Action Committee (SJAC) will raise awareness about this global movement through an awareness campaign across Sheridan campuses. The international campaign takes place every year from November 25 – December 10 and is represented by the colour orange. Keep your eyes peeled for information about the National Day to End Violence Against Women, World Aids Day, International Day of People with a Disability, National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and Human Rights Day. SJAC will be engaging students in discussions about this campaign in hallways, classrooms and through social media. Join the conversation on social media using #HearMeToo and #OrangeTheWorld.

Dare to Care Peer Mentor Outreach
Tuesday, December 4 and Wednesday, December 5 (All Campuses)
Be on the lookout for Sheridan Peer Mentor Leaders, who will be on hand at each campus to educate community members about consent and the college’s Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence Policy and Response Protocol while inviting students to sign the pledge to end gender-based violence. The times and locations are as follows:

  • Trafalgar Campus: December 4, 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. (B-Wing)
  • Davis Campus: December 4, 11 a.m. – 2p.m. (H-Wing)
  • HMC: December 5, 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. (B-Wing, Creative Commons)

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women Ceremony
Thursday, December 6 at 11 a.m., Davis Campus (B-Wing Amphitheatre)
Please dedicate 20 minutes to join Sheridan students and employees in commemorating the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This moving event will mark the anniversary of the murders of 14 young women at École Polytechnique de Montréal on December 6, 1989. Community members are invited to join our live ceremony at Davis Campus, or view the ceremony on Sheridan TV or at one of the on-campus viewing stations.

Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse Evening Vigil
Thursday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m., Davis Campus (B-Wing Atrium)
Join the Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse (PCAWA) for their annual candlelight vigil in honour of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and remember the women who lost their lives and commit yourself to ending gender-based violence.

Let’s stand together to eliminate sexual assault, gender-based violence and discrimination in our community. You can make a difference!
