Jane Ngobia

Effective January 14, 2019, Dr. Jane Ngobia will join Sheridan as our Senior Advisor, Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Communities.

Applications for this new position were received from a number of impressive, highly-qualified candidates. The selection committee – which included a student, faculty member, and administrators – was deeply impressed with Jane’s strong track record in managing high-profile, equity and human rights functions at a number of postsecondary institutions. She has a proven ability to establish institutional inclusion frameworks, build trust among members of the community, and manage teams tasked with dispute resolution, policy development, ensuring institutional compliance with legislation, and delivering education and training. Through this interconnected suite of activities, Jane has successfully built institutional cultures of respect for human rights, equity and inclusion.

Jane currently serves as the Assistant Vice President, Diversity & Human Rights at the University of Guelph. She has also overseen the equity and inclusion portfolio at the University of Toronto at Mississauga and the OCAD University in various capacities. In addition to her substantive administrative portfolios, Jane has also served as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences at OCADU, a lecturer at Centennial College and a Dean, Deputy Dean and Lecturer at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

Jane is described as a community peace-builder and change agent. Over the years, she has served as a Chief Diversity Officer, implemented a human rights complaint system, and co-founded a pan-institutional group that brings together senior Chief Equity, Diversity and Inclusion officers. Jane has led initiatives that ensure compliance with employment equity and accessibility for persons with disabilities, and championed the establishment of the first-ever International Student Centre at the University of Toronto at Mississauga.

Her rich academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education and a Master of Education in Theory and Policy Development from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. She also holds a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Jane has published in The Canadian Journal for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and has presented at the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services. She also currently serves as Treasurer of the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education.

Jane will report directly to Janet Morrison and join Sheridan’s President and Vice Presidents group. This positioning further cements Sheridan’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity. Upon her arrival, the Centre for Equity and Inclusion at Sheridan will report to her.

We look forward to welcoming Jane to Sheridan in January.
