Creating Safe and Supportive WIL Environments

wil word bubbleWith a focus on how to create a safe and supportive WIL environment for staff and students, new resources and training continue to be provided to Sheridan’s Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) practitioners.

The WIL Hub collaborated with various partners to combine expertise and to tailor information and case examples specific to WIL experiences (e.g. field placement/experience, internship, co-op).

With the help of Jessica Derreck, Manager, Records and Information Management and Joanne Islip, Project Manager, the WIL Hub introduced a working draft of a guide to Privacy and Documentation Standards for Sheridan. The purpose of this resource is to create consistency among WIL practitioners, to assist in abiding legislative and regulatory obligations, and to ensure Sheridan adheres to responsible record-keeping and privacy practices. The fundamental nature of this work is to ensure that students receive the best support and service possible.

Additionally, to better understand how Sheridan policies extend to WIL activities, Sunand Sharma, Manager, Student Rights & Responsibilities Office, led an effort to connect policy to WIL case examples. Relevant policies include the Student Code of Conduct and Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence Policy; a key resource includes How to Report Concerning Student Behaviours and Activity. Case examples and options for practitioners were developed in collaboration with Cory Latimer, Manager, Cooperative Education, Lindsay Anderson, Director, Clinical & Experiential Learning, and Jessica Derreck.

This coordinated approach of expertise between departments and 100 practitioners provides an avenue to better understand how to manage WIL-related situations. The WIL Hub continues to communicate information to WIL practitioners via a virtual community in SLATE.

If you have any questions about the Community of Practice or the WIL Hub, please contact any member of the WIL Hub Team:

  • Matthew Rempel, Associate Dean, Career Education and Co-curricular Learning
  • Joanne Islip, Project Manager, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Hub
  • Alice O’Carroll, Project Manager, Employer Relations
  • Jordan Carlson, Business Analyst

We wish to thank everyone for their support since the launch last fall!
