39.5% – Let’s keep it going!

Thanks to everyone’s support of the Zero Waste (ZW) program, waste diversion at the Trafalgar Campus has been improving steadily since April when the Zero Waste bins were installed and became available across the campus. The waste diversion rate for July was 39.5%. This was a significant improvement compared to the diversion rate of 13.8% last July. As well, over the last four months from April to July, the Trafalgar Campus has reduced its waste to the landfill by 107.6 tons when compared to the same period last year. We are hoping to see similar improvements at Davis and HMC.

As the fall semester is starting this week, let’s continue our efforts to sort our waste properly. When throwing out your waste, please take a moment to study the Zero Waste signage to make sure that it is going into the right bins. We should also encourage all new and returning students to support the Zero Waste program inside and outside the classroom. It would be helpful if every faculty member can help promote the Zero Waste program to his/her students.

As Sheridan is aiming to reduce landfill waste to zero by 2020, we still have a lot of work to do before reaching our Zero Waste goals. To make the Zero Waste initiative a truly successful one, we will need everyone’s full support.

If you have any questions about the ZW program or if you would like to join one of Sheridan’s Green Teams, please contact Wai Chu Cheng, Sustainability Coordinator, Office of Sustainability at waichu.cheng@sheridancollege.ca
