The Office of Applied Research and Innovation is pleased to announce that President Jeff Zabudsky has signed an historic agreement that gives Sheridan full Tri-Council eligibility to administer research funds from three of Canada’s largest research funding bodies: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This announcement follows the recent decision by CIHR to bestow Sheridan the right to administer CIHR funds. This designation was first awarded by NSERC in 2008 and by SSHRC in 2011.

The agreement represents an important and tangible element in the shared accountability of granting agencies and institutions in support of research, according to CIHR Senior Financial Monitoring and Policy Officer Robert Potvin.

“These are very exciting times for Sheridan. As we begin our journey from a highly respected college to a world-class undergraduate teaching university, the role of our applied research and innovation activities sharpens into focus,” said Dr. Zabudsky. “This means more experiential learning opportunities for our students, stronger professional development for our faculty, and a curriculum rich with real-world problem solving that connects directly with classroom learning.”

About the Tri-Council Agencies

The Tri-Council Agencies are a major source of research funding for post-secondary institutions in Canada:

• CIHR is the Government of Canada’s agency responsible for funding health research in Canada. Composed of 13 Institutes, CIHR provides leadership and support to more than 14,000 health researchers and trainees across Canada.

• NSERC aims to make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians. The agency supports post-secondary students in their advanced studies, promotes and supports discovery research, and fosters innovation by encouraging Canadian companies to participate and invest in post-secondary research projects.

• SSHRC is the federal agency that promotes and supports research and training in the humanities and social sciences in order to enhance our understanding of modern social, cultural, technological, environmental, economic and wellness issues.
