Sheridan gives students a flexible approach to study

Sheridan’s students have even greater control over where, when and how they study with the launch of three new initiatives for the Fall 2013 term.

Custom Timetables (aka Course Based Registration),  and the Student-is-a-Student strategy are a collaboration between the Faculty of Business,  Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies, Faculty of Continuing and Professional Studies, Office of the Registrar,  Information Technology, Student Services and Finance.

Following are some of the highlights:

Assigned and Custom Timetables

Beginning in the Fall 2013 term, students will be registered under one of two models:   a Custom Timetable or an Assigned Timetable.

  • Custom Timetables:  students in the Early Childhood Education and Business diploma and advanced diploma programs will create a personalized timetable from scratch – allowing students to select the optimum day and time to study. Sheridan has also scheduled additional classes to provide students with even more timetable and course options.
  • Assigned Timetables: Students in other programs will be presented with an Assigned Timetable, prepopulated with classes, which they may modify using the add, drop and swap tools through myStudent Centre.

Visit mytimetable.sheridaninstitute.ca to view more information on Custom and Assigned Timetables, including enrolment dates and deadlines and how-to guides.

Student-is-a-Student

The Student-is-a-Student model allows students in the pilot programs to study on a part-time or full- time basis. Students can switch between a part- time and full-time course load from term to term and all students can register for day or evening courses. Both part-time and full-time students will register for courses at the same time and a new Part-time Admissions stream has been created to enable students to begin their studies at Sheridan on a part-time basis.

New Processes, Tools and Supports

To support the roll out of the new initiatives, Sheridan has also developed:

  • enhanced enrolment appointments, to control sequencing of students to reduce potential blockages
  • reports to view registration process status
  • ability for Associate Deans and Academic Portfolio Administrators  in pilot programs to access and adjust enrolment caps and issue student-specific permissions to override closed class conditions
  • introduction of  reserved capacity features to assist with late authorizations (for  new Business  students)
  • new collaborative support model and escalation protocol to support students during registration

Information sessions on the final steps of this initiative were held in July and August.  A copy of the presentation, including detailed documentation, samples of the communications materials sent to students and the detail regarding the support model is available on RegNet.
