Phase 3 of Sheridan’s Printing project is nearing completion and several significant changes will be introduced for the upcoming fall semester. These changes will go into effect beginning Thursday, August 22.
New Lexmark Multifunction Devices (MFDs) Being Deployed Across All Sheridan Campuses
One of the primary objectives of the Printing Project was to choose and implement a College-wide, cohesive printing solution from one manufacturer that could easily integrate with our current print management solution, PaperCut.
Following the RFP process and a thorough testing period that included users from various departments, faculties and campuses, the contract for the new MFDs was awarded to 4 Office Automation. Deployment of the new Lexmark MFD’s will commence in academic areas and labs across Sheridan’s campuses throughout the coming weeks. As well as printing, users will be able to utilize features such as scan to email. Secure access printers in administrative areas will be introduced later in the fall.
Printer Centralization – Transitioning from Classroom-based Printing to Zone-based Printing in Academic Areas
In keeping with the College’s sustainability goals, general-purpose printers are being phased out of classrooms and centralized printing zones are being established in hallways adjacent to academic areas. By reducing the number of printers required to efficiently service all users, we will move closer to achieving our goal of reducing Sheridan’s carbon footprint related to printing through reductions in paper usage, electrical consumption, toner and supplies, and general waste. The College will also realize savings on hardware costs, maintenance and support contracts, and other expenses associated with printing. There will be approximately 70 new MFD locations established across all campuses.
New Global Print Queues Being Implemented this Week
Another important phase of the project was to fully implement global print release across all of Sheridan’s campuses. With global print release, users send their print job to the global print queue associated with their campus and they can release their job from any academic printer, on any campus, using their Sheridan oneCARD. Global print release will be implemented in administrative areas later in the fall term.
Direct Access to Printers Has Been Disabled
Users who printed directly to a network printer via a printer’s IP address rather than a Sheridan print queue will no longer be able to do so. All users must now configure printers using one of authorized queues. Please refer to the documentation on IT’s Printing Self Help page for details on configuring print queues.
