School of Applied Computing Retirements

After successful careers with the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, two long-standing School of Applied Computing colleagues are retiring.

Bill Farkas, with over 30 years at Sheridan, has decided to change his pace and step into retirement. A long-standing faculty member and Program Coordinator of two Applied Computing programs: Internet Communications Technology and the joint Bachelor of Computing and Network Communications (Honours) – Internet Communications Technology degree program with Brock University, Bill has advanced the programs alongside continually evolving Internet technologies, and has been a dedicated and highly esteemed colleague.

I would also like to announce that Becky (Rebecca) Moore will also be leaving Sheridan to join her husband in retirement and enjoy her new role as a retiree. Becky started at Sheridan in 2006 as a Research Assistant and since that time has worked in a variety of roles culminating most recently as an Academic Portfolio Administrator for Applied Computing at Trafalgar. Becky has always been a gracious and energetic team player, and has proven the breadth of her skills time and time again in each role she has pursued.

Please join me, and the School of Applied Computing, in wishing Bill and Becky health and happiness in their respective new adventures, and a very happy retirement to both.

Pat Burns
Interim Associate Dean, School of Applied Computing (Trafalgar)

It is with mixed emotion that I announce that Gillian Morris, a cornerstone of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, is setting sail on a new path. Gillian will be entering retirement at the end of June.

Gillian started with Sheridan in 2004 in the Registrar’s office. She moved into the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology in 2008 where she has worn several different hats, from Academic Portfolio Administrator to her current role of Manager, Planning and Projects. Gillian has supported numerous projects, initiatives and undertakings during her decade in FAST and has been an integral team member. Her passion, professionalism and congenial spirit will be greatly missed.

Save the date: on June 19th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm we will celebrate Gillian’s career at Sheridan and her upcoming retirement. More details about Gillian’s retirement party will follow, closer to the date, but if you have any questions, please contact Karolina Hryciuk at X 5730.

Congratulations Gillian. We wish you every happiness in your retirement.

50 Ways to Reduce Your Waste Line: Week 36 – Ordering

Choose products with less packaging.

Waste-Tree-week-36

Welcome to Week 36 of 50 Ways to Reduce Your Waste Line. Last week, we talked about powering down your computer when you are away. This week, we ask you to order products that will produce less waste. We should avoid getting products that come with unnecessary packaging, such as plastic wrapping film. Products made of mixed materials make them non-recyclable and destined for landfills.

One Thing You Can Do:
When you order classroom or office supplies, think about choosing items that are made from recycled materials, are recyclable, or have reduced packaging. Look for items that are packaged in paper instead of plastic. If you are ordering printer toner, make sure you choose cartridges that are recyclable; many companies will take the used cartridges back – check with Facility Services at your campus for the procedure.

Additional Information:

An exciting article was published recently by CBC discussing “how Canada will use its presidency of the G7 to try to persuade the world’s richest and most industrialized countries to adopt ambitious goals for plastics recycling and waste reduction.”

Included in the article is the following quote from Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, who spoke from an international conference on the world’s oceans in Cancun, Mexico: “We are looking at a zero-plastics-waste charter.”

Trafalgar Wildflower Planting on June 9 – Volunteers Are Needed!

Sheridan Wildflower Garden

Did you know that 90% of all wild flowering plants depend on pollination? Did you know that one in three bites of food we eat relies on bees for pollination? Sadly, many of our pollinator species in Canada are declining at an alarming rate.  We can help save the bees and butterflies by creating a natural habitat and food sources for them right here at the Trafalgar Campus.

Come out on June 9th to help enhance our Wildflower Garden that we started in 2016! Our volunteers will help us plant perennial native wildflowers and grasses. The new plants will attract more pollinators and prevent the invasive Buckthorn plant from returning to the site.

We as humans rely on pollinators to survive, as almost everything we eat is thanks to them. Let’s do what we can to help the species, which in turn, is helping ourselves for our future.

The Mission Zero team along with the support of the Oakville Green Conservation Association, and Sheridan’s Centre for Indigenous Learning and Support, expect to have a fun day while increasing the biodiversity of our campus. A pizza lunch will be provided. Hope to see you there!

Office Online Apps and OneDrive services are now available for students, staff and faculty. Students can now obtain a full version of Office ProPlus through our Office 365 portal and no longer need to visit OnTheHub for their Office licensing. For more information on getting started with these services visit: Office Online and OneDrive Services Are Here!

This change aligns with a Microsoft initiative to improve licensing of personal devices in educational environments. Under their updated agreement terms, some Microsoft products will not be available for personal devices via OnTheHub as of June 1, 2018. For more information visit: https://sheridaninstitute.onthehub.com/. College-owned devices (i.e. desktops, laptops, podium PC’s etc.) are not affected by these changes. Licensing for college-owned devices will continue to be provided through the Information Technology department.

Here are a few tips and tricks from Microsoft for getting more out of Windows 10.

  • Simply select the battery icon in the taskbar and use the slider to choose your performance and battery balance.
  • Press the Windows logo key and type the name of whatever you want to find in the search box.
  • To switch between open windows, hold down the Alt key and keep pressing Tab until the window you want is selected. Then, release the Alt key.
  • Press the Windows logo key + D to minimize all your open windows and go right to your desktop.
  • Stop notifications from showing during a presentation by turning on Hide notifications when I’m duplicating my screen. Or, keep them from showing on your lock screen when you’re not logged in by turning off Show notifications on the lock screen.

IT Services has been rolling out the Windows 10 operating system across Sheridan College for students, in teaching and learning spaces and upon request for faculty and staff for supported hardware over the past two years. And so far, the feedback has been awesome! If you are in an Admin area and are expecting new hardware, you can also expect that machine to be running Windows 10.

Questions or Concerns?

If you have any questions or concerns regarding Sheridan’s Windows 10 rollout for Administrative Users, please contact the IT Service Desk at extension 2150 or send email to servicedesk@sheridancollege.ca.

Sheridan President's Report 2017_cover_jpeg_resized

We’re pleased to announce that the 2017 President’s Report is now online. This interactive, digital version of the report contains links to additional articles, videos, and other content.

This year’s report looks back at a momentous year in Sheridan’s history – the 50th anniversary of when we first opened our doors for classes.

As part of our anniversary celebrations this year, we’ve looked back into our history and discovered how the traits that set Sheridan apart today –  purposeful creativity, a commitment to community, and innovation — are firmly rooted in values we’ve held since our founding. We’ve connected the stories in this year’s report to early initiatives and events at Sheridan that reflected these values as the college took shape and began to grow.

To view the online version of the President’s Report, click here: http://bit.ly/2xc6S7m

The report is also on the Sheridan website under About Sheridan/Administration and Governance/Office of the President/President’s Report.

Limited quantities of printed copies are also available. If you would like to request a printed copy of the report, please contact Carolina Salcedo in the office of Communications, Public Affairs and Marketing at carolina.salcedo1@sheridancollege.ca.

50 Ways to Reduce Your Waste Line: Week 37 – Leaving

Waste Tree Week 37

In summer, lower shades on windows facing the morning sun to reduce solar heat gain.

Welcome to Week 37 of 50 Ways to Reduce Your Waste Line. Last week, we talked about trying to use products that come with less packaging. This week, we ask you to lower any shades in your east-facing office before you leave at night to reduce solar heat gain the next morning.

One Thing You Can Do:

While having natural daylight in our workspaces is aesthetically appealing, it comes with a negative effect on our buildings’ cooling systems during the summer months. The room temperature of the areas near the windows rises as the sunlight comes through the windows. And during the summer time, the temperature may rise above a comfortable level. By simply lowering shades in a typically sunny east-facing office before you leave each day, you can help reduce early-morning heat gain in your office from the morning sun. This helps to keep the room temperature comfortable in your office throughout the day, while also reducing the strain on the College’s HVAC systems.

Roller blinds

Additional Information:

This phenomenon is the same as that experienced in commercial greenhouses. While the resulting convective heating is desirable in greenhouses, it is not at all desirable in building office spaces during the dog days of summer.

It was the understanding of this process that gave rise to the term “greenhouse effect,” which relates to the accumulation of heat-trapping greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere emitted from human activities, which have been increasing substantially since the Industrial Revolution (1800). The GHG, including carbon dioxide and methane, exist naturally in the atmosphere. But the drastic increase of human activities has significantly increased the atmospheric concentrations of the GHG and this results in climate change.

Other ways to reduce solar heat gain in buildings include planting shade trees, installing curtains (of the non-sheer variety), installing fixed and/or mechanical louvres on the exterior of the windows, along with the application of window film or other aftermarket window treatments.

HMC Pedestrian Safety

In light of the construction of the new Student and Athletics Expansion taking place at HMC along Rathburn Rd, we’d like to remind you of a few pedestrian safety precautions when making your way around campus.

Please use only the designated paths and sidewalks to and from the theatre lot as indicated in the diagram above. Please be aware of the construction activities that are taking place in this area. Do not enter any construction areas. It is recommended that staff use designated walkways highlighted in GREEN in the diagram above. Please avoid using pathways highlighted in RED as construction vehicles will be entering and exiting the worksite. HMC can be accessed using entrances denoted by a yellow star (*).

In addition, please keep in mind the following:

1) Only take the designated paths and sidewalks. Avoid taking any short cuts.

2) Cross Rathburn Road West and Living Arts Drive only at controlled intersections (i.e. traffic lights). Before crossing intersections ensure vehicles have stopped and you make eye contact with drivers. You may need to to press the walk button at every intersection to activate pedestrian traffic lights.

3) Avoid taking the narrow path on the west side of Living Arts Drive.

Thank you for keeping these important safety tips in mind. If you have any questions or concerns about the construction, please contact constructionfeedback@sheridancollege.ca.

Activities Based Budgeting Model (ABB)

$

0

In an earlier post, we advised that Sheridan is embarking on a process to develop a new resource management model called Activities Based Budgeting, or ABB.

ABB has been widely adopted by postsecondary institutions throughout North America.  Under ABB, revenues generated by units of an organization are allocated directly to the unit responsible for the activity. ABB has been shown to provide greater transparency into the budgeting process and to create incentives for units to more effectively manage their resources and expenditures.

Sheridan has partnered with the management consulting firm Campus Strategies LLC to help us move forward in implementing ABB.  Last week, four information sessions were held at our three campuses hosted by Larry Goldstein, our lead consultant.  In these sessions, Larry provided a detailed overview of ABB and the principles that inform it.

If you were unable to attend one of the sessions, and would like to better acquaint yourself with the ABB model, Larry has kindly provided his Powerpoint slides.  You can view them here.

The next step in this process is the creation of an ABB Task Force that will work collaboratively to determine the principles and model for an ABB framework that is specific to Sheridan. It is anticipated that this Task Force will be formed in the fall, and will include faculty, staff, administrators and students.

We will provide you with regular updates as this initiative moves forward.
