Sheridan will mark Pride month from Wednesday, June 13 to Wednesday, July 11, 2018.  A number of activities have been planned, including library displays, contests and more.

Our celebrations will begin with a flag raising ceremony:

Date: Wednesday June 13
Time: 12:00 pm
Location: Davis Campus, outside B-Wing. The ceremony will be shared via Facebook Live at both HMC and Trafalgar Road Campus.

If you have questions about the accessibility of this event or if you need to request accommodations in order to participate please contact equity@sheridancollege.ca  or call ext 2777.

For the duration of the month-long period, the Pride flag will be flown at all Sheridan campuses — on outdoor flag poles at Trafalgar and Davis and on the digital sign at HMC. These dates were chosen to purposely coincide with different festivities occurring in our home communities throughout June and July. By bridging the two months, we will also enable all faculty – whether they are away from Sheridan in May and June or in July and August, to be part of our celebrations.

This year’s events have been planned by an organizing committee with representatives from The Centre for Equity and Inclusion, Sheridan Student Union, OPSEU local 244, OPSEU local 245, International Office, Student Affairs and Communications, Public Affairs and Marketing.

50 Ways to Reduce Your Waste Line: Week 38 – Commuting

Carpool, even if only some days; it still makes a big difference. Consider joining a carpool group or starting one yourself.

Waste-Tree-week-38

Welcome to Week 38 of 50 Ways to Reduce Your Waste Line. Last week, we asked you to lower any shades in your east-facing office before you leave at night to reduce solar heat gain the next morning. This week, we encourage you to consider carpooling as an alternative way to commute to campus.

Did you know that the Greater Toronto Area has the biggest and most congested highways in the world? A CAA study called Grinding to a Halt, Evaluating Canada’s Worst Bottlenecks.(2017) found that the stretch of highway 401 that cuts across the north part of the city of Toronto costs commuters over three million hours of annual delays and increases commute times by as much as 50%. Being stuck in traffic is often a stressful experience as it wastes your time, your gas, and it contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution. Carpooling would reduce the amount of cars on the major highways, and in turn, make your commute a better experience.

The benefits to carpooling:

Carpooling reduces pollution.  If you carpooled with other people instead of driving alone, you would help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

You save money. Gas prices are very high in Ontario averaging around $1.37/litre in recent weeks. Carpooling can reduce your cost on gas and vehicle maintenance since you’re sharing it with your carpool partners.

A faster commute. Carpoolers can take advantage of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, letting you bypass traffic. And you get to park in dedicated carpool parking spots.

Social element. Get to know people you live near or work with.

Additional Information:

If you’re interested in carpooling and want to know how to find a carpool partner, you may want to consider signing up for Smart Commute’s online carpooling program: https://explore.smartcommute.ca/#/

The Smart Commute Tool will help you find other commuters in your area to partner up with, as well as a cost and emissions calculator to monitor your organization’s cost and GHG emission savings.

Sheridan College is a member of Smart Commute which provides a network for:

Davis Campus: https://explore.smartcommute.ca/s/sheridan-daviscampus
Hazel McCallion Campus: https://explore.smartcommute.ca/s/sheridan-hazelmccallioncampus
Trafalgar Campus: https://explore.smartcommute.ca/s/sheridan-trafalgarcampus

Sheridan also offers parking spots reserved for cars with carpooling permits at Davis and Trafalgar. These spots are located near main entrances of campus buildings. For more information visit: parking.sheridancollege.ca.

Strive to Thrive Campaign Moves to Next Phase

Thank you to everyone in the Sheridan community who submitted their ideas and suggestions for the Strive to Thrive Campaign.

We received a total of 350 submissions since the initial call for ideas, which occurred at the Strive to Thrive Town Hall meetings in February, and was repeated during a Creative Problem Solving (CPS)-facilitated session at the Senate presentation at HMC in March  and the Coffee Chats in April and May.

As a reminder, the campaign aimed to tap into the ingenuity of our community to discover how we might collectively adopt a mindset that encourages institutional cost savings, efficiencies, and revenue generating opportunities.  Ultimately our goal is to foster the future sustainability and growth of Sheridan.

We are now moving away from the divergent stage of the CPS methodology.  As we prepare to enter the convergent thinking phase, work has begun to identify the criteria and platform that will be used to evaluate the submissions and select the ones that can be further developed for potential implementation.

As part of this effort, we are also undertaking a careful review of all ideas submitted. Our intent is to identify those ideas that do not span multiple areas of responsibility and that can be sent to individual departments for immediate consideration.  We also hope that everyone who submitted ideas will continue to discuss them within their respective Departments.  As Mary mentioned during the Strive to Thrive sessions, we hope this campaign will help to shift the conversation and the thinking at Sheridan about the role that each of us has to play in fostering Sheridan’s operational sustainability.

Stay tuned to future issues of the Insider where we’ll continue to share our plans, as they’re finalized, for moving this campaign forward.

Sheridan is pleased to announce that the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development has approved Sheridan’s Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA) 2017-2020.

The SMA is a three-year contract or operating agreement that is signed by all postsecondary institutions in Ontario and the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD). The SMA outlines the role that each institution performs in the postsecondary system, outlines its key areas of differentiation, and documents how it will build on its strengths to both achieve its vision and help drive system-wide objectives articulated by the Ministry.

At Sheridan, the SMA is a strategic driver that supports our three priority areas of focus: the Academic Plan, Our People and Operational Sustainability. To read Sheridan’s SMA, please visit: ourpriorities.sheridancollege.ca and click on the link to the Strategic Mandate Agreement the dark blue header banner.

Catherine Zheng

I’m very pleased to announce the appointment of Catherine Zheng to the new position of Senior Manager, Budget Model, in the Department of Finance and Administration.  Catherine will join us on Monday, June 4th and will be located in Room B205.

In this new role, Catherine will bring her expertise to help Sheridan develop a new Activities Based Budgeting (ABB) model.  Under ABB, revenues generated by units of an organization are allocated directly to the unit responsible for the activity. ABB has been shown to provide greater transparency into the budgeting process and to create incentives for units to more effectively manage their resources and expenditures.  To learn more about ABB, please click here to view the slides from the overview presentations that were delivered this past May at Sheridan by Larry Goldstein of Campus Strategies LLC.

Catherine will take a leadership role in guiding the committees and sub-committees charged with developing and implementing the ABB model and will be responsible for its ongoing management.  The ABB model is key to achieving the goals of the institution over the long term, and is part of Integrated Planning at Sheridan – a sustainable approach to institution-wide planning that aligns organizational academic and non-academic planning, and facilitates priority-based decision making.

Catherine is a charter holder for both the CPA and CFA designations. She graduated from the University of Waterloo’s Honours Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy program and Master of Accountancy program. She is passionate about accounting and finance, and has gained her skills from a variety of work experiences in financial reporting, budgeting, and investment analysis and financial modelling. In her most recent role with Rexall, she provided forecasts for new store openings, streamlined the financial modelling/budgeting process, and assisted with major transactions. In her spare time, she likes to play music, swim, cook, and study different languages.

Please join me in extending a warm Sheridan welcome to Catherine!

Connect5 Conference

On Thursday, May 31, Sheridan was proud to host the Connect5 Conference, which brings together library professionals from five GTA colleges, as well as the Ontario Colleges Library Service (OCLS). Held at HMC, the theme of this year’s conference was ‘Open’: what it means, how it influences, inspires or challenges, and how it relates to work within the library profession.

The day kicked off with a welcome from Conference Chair Karen Lints, Applied Health and Community Studies Librarian at Sheridan and Co-Chair, Patricia Buckley, Digital Curator & Special Collections Librarian at Sheridan.

Following a welcome address from Joan Sweeney Marsh, Director, Sheridan Library and Learning Services, keynote speaker Dr. Catherine Hale, Director of Creative Campus Planning at Sheridan, did a presentation titled “Open: Living the Creative Campus.” Her talk focused on a variety of Creative Campus initiatives at Sheridan, including the Temporary Contemporary exhibit Nitsiit, by Canadian Inuk sculptor Couzyn van Heuvelen, the Jeff Thomas: Indians on Tour exhibit and the series of accompanying Lunch and Learns at the Gallery, as well as other initiatives.

Following the keynote presentation was a series of PechaKucha-style presentations from representatives from the five GTA colleges, which discussed various initiatives at their respective institutions. PechaKucha is a presentation style in which each presenter shows 20 slides for 20 seconds each. Each presentation is no longer than six minutes and 40 seconds. From Sheridan, Kathleen Oakey, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian at Sheridan discussed building a repository of Information Literacy Materials in a LMS, and Danielle Palombi, Manager, Centre of Student Academic Excellence & Angela Clark, Academic Integrity Facilitator presented on Academic Integrity initiatives at Sheridan.

Makerspace table

After lunch, attendees received a tour of the HMC Campus. Guests then broke into small groups to discuss different themes on ‘Open.’ During the afternoon break, Sheridan’s commitment to creativity was evident, with a Maker space table, featuring button making, colouring books and brooch making.

Congratulations to everyone involved for making this year’s Conference a success!

Board of Governors Appoints Sheridan’s Next President

Dr. Janet Morrison

Earlier this morning (June 11), Sheridan’s Board of Governors enthusiastically accepted the unanimous recommendation by Sheridan’s Presidential Search Committee to appoint Dr. Janet Morrison as Sheridan’s Eighth President and Vice Chancellor. Dr. Morrison will begin her five-year term on August 7, 2018, replacing outgoing President Dr. Mary Preece who is set to retire.

Over 50 applications for the position were received from highly qualified candidates across Canada, with broad diversity in academic disciplines, prior post-secondary experience, gender, ethnicity and previous leadership positions.  Of them, 24 were interviewed by an Executive Search firm to distill a list of 12 recommended candidates, of whom 8 were invited forward to the formal interview process.

The Selection Committee was deeply impressed by Dr. Morrison’s accomplishments as an educator and as an executive administrator who has continually earned the trust of those around her.  Her deep understanding of the sector and passion for student success made her ideally suited to lead Sheridan and shape its future.

Dr. Morrison joined Sheridan in November, 2016 as Provost and Vice President Academic.  Since that time, she has led the institution through a highly collegial and consultative process to develop Sheridan’s Academic Plan.  She has also introduced renewed rigor to recruitment, retention and efforts to enhance the student experience.  Further work to align institutional initiatives to Sheridan’s vision, key differentiators and priority areas of focus are creating a strategic planning culture within the organization to support data-driven decision making and optimize resource allocation.

Prior to joining Sheridan, Dr. Morrison spent 17 years at York University working in various roles focused on learning, discovery and engagement, culminating in her position as Vice-Provost, Students.  Before joining York, she held leadership positions in student affairs at the University of Guelph, Bowling Green State University, Medical College of Ohio and George Brown College. Dr. Morrison holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in history and education.  She has taught at several institutions as both a teaching assistant and a member of the part-time faculty. She is the former Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and has previously chaired the Board of Directors for the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto.

The Board of Governors would also like to take this opportunity to express its enormous gratitude to Dr. Mary Preece for her outstanding leadership of Sheridan as President since November, 2016 and for her role as Provost and Vice President Academic from 2008-2016. The strides she has made at Sheridan in the crucial realms of its Academic Innovation Strategy, governance, Intellectual Property regime and Polytechnic vision have placed Sheridan on strong footing in a climate of shifting challenges and opportunities.  Her wise counsel, integrity, and ability to motivate others to follow her vision make her a very hard act to follow.

The Board of Governors also extends its thanks to all Sheridan employees who contributed to the development of the Presidential position profile by sharing their input on the qualities they would like to see in their next leader and their opinions about the core responsibilities associated with the role.  Similarly, the Board extends its sincere appreciation to the members of the Presidential Search Committee which included representation from the Board, faculty, staff, Senate and student body.

Sincerely,

Steve Boone

Sheridan Convocation 2018 – A Brief Recap

$

Last week, over 6,300 new graduates crossed the stage at the Living Arts Centre in the successful culmination of their Sheridan experience. The impressive organization and presentation of ten ceremonies over the course of four days was the result of excellent team work behind the stage by many areas of the college, including the Office of the Registrar, Conference and Events, Sheridan Production House, Alumni, Communications, Public Affairs and Marketing and numerous volunteers from around the College who came to the Living Arts Centre to assist with welcoming guests. Click on the image below to get a glimpse of what goes in to staging this hallmark event in the life of our institution.

YouTube

Sheridan also extends a heartfelt thanks to the countless individuals from across the college who participated in the ceremonies to read students’ names, hood our students, present honour cords and eagle feathers, cheer on our graduates and extend their personal congratulations as their students crossed the stage.

Over the course of the week, ten highly accomplished individuals shared their wit, wisdom and insight with our graduates through their Convocation keynote addresses.  Among the speakers:

  • Hunter Reid, Chairman of Workforce Capital (and a Sheridan Business alumnus
  • Howard Phee, President and CEO, Riko Enterprises
  • Nelson Ferreira, Founder of Sound Dogs
  • Michael Prokopw, Cultural Historian and Curator
  • Jason Mihaik, Associate Professor – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Orlando Bowen, Executive Director, One Voice One Team Youth Leadership Organization
  • Lyndsay Macdonald, Coordinator, Association of Early Childhood Educators
  • Nishan Duraiappah, Deputy Chief, Halton Regional Police
  • Bob Peacock, President, Almag Aluminum
  • Sultan Akif, Founder and GM of Experience Your Life Inc.

Ten graduating students, selected by their faculties to deliver the valedictory address, shared their unique perspectives and memories of their Sheridan experience.

This year’s Convocation included a significant milestone, marking the last one for Linda Dalton, Registrar, who is retiring at the end of this month after 35 years of service to Sheridan.  Linda has presided over Convocation for many years now with grace and poise, and the warmth and enthusiasm she brought to our ceremonies will be greatly missed.

Linda’s colleague, Diana Lindner plays a key role in Convocation every year as the behind-the-scenes OTR lead.  This year, she went above and beyond her routine duties to create special memories for our graduates, by creating a custom Convocation gown for a service dog that has also been a part of the Sheridan community.

Kudos to everyone who worked so hard to make Convocation a positive and memorable experience for our graduates and their families and friends.
