A window on creativity

Windows usually connect interior spaces with the world outside by directing our vision outward through a specific controlled aperture. Windows orient the viewer’s gaze by putting a selected slice of the universe inside a controlled frame. The B–Wing display window on Davis Campus in front of the B204 offices reverses this usual process by directing your gaze inward. Currently, it hosts some of the photographic work of Ken Snell, professor of Architectural Technology in the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology. This work features 24 images taken while Ken was on sabbatical leave in the fall of 2014. The images in this exhibition are like little windows inside of a bigger window. They provide a view upon creativity but also a glimpse inside the imaginative world of the person holding and pointing the camera and directing the viewer’s gaze.

Be sure to stop by the space when you are at the Davis Campus to see Ken’s work. Scan the QR code below for more details about Ken’s work:

Artist’s statement:

Possibility is not a characteristic of an object, but it is the recognition of potential by the viewer. When viewers seek personal meaning between the selected images they insert themselves into the creative process and discover a world of endless possibility within themselves… Fascination is the threshold of a daydream…it is the motivator of reverie and imagination.     – Ken Snell

From the opening to closing ceremonies of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am games, Sheridan alumni, students and employees are well-represented – in competition, behind the scenes supporting the athletes’ experience, contributing to PANAMANIA, and treating injuries in a wide range of sporting events.

Carrying the torch

John Helliker, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Sheridan’s Screen Industries Research and Training (SIRT) Centre, carried the Pan Am Games torch through his neighbourhood in the west end of Toronto on July 9.

To read more about John’s once-in-a-lifetime experience, check out the latest post on Sheridan’s Curiosities blog here.

Behind the scenes

Amanda Fleet, a 2005 alumna, is a guiding force for both the opening and closing ceremonies in her role as production coordinator.  As a member of the Athlete Advisory Council TORONTO 2015, Warren Sawkiw, a 1999 graduate and former MLB baseball player, is working to provide the best possible experience for the thousands of athletes participating in the games.

In competition

Molham Babouli and Raheem Edwards, both Sheridan students and members of the Bruins soccer team, helped lead their team to a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national title in 2014, catching the eye of the men’s national soccer coach in the process. In Canada’s hard-fought opening game against Brazil on July 12, Mo Babouli scored Canada’s lone goal. Watch the video of his goal here (cue to 1:36).

Amanda Braddock, a student in the Human Resources post-graduate program, competed in the 48kg weight class on July 11. Amanda solidified her place on the team at the Canadian Championships in May, lifting a 159kg total (71kg snatch and 88kg clean and jerk), and breaking two of her own Ontario records. The Pan Am Games marked her first international appearance.

Read more about Amanda’s journey to the Pan Am Games and how she has had to learn to embrace her new role as an athlete on Sheridan’s Curiosities blog.

Josh Cassidy, a 2009 Illustration graduate, is a two-time Paralympian and Canadian record-holder in wheelchair racing.  He will be competing in the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m events at the Parapan Am Games.  Josh holds the record for the fastest wheelchair marathon ever, a title he earned at the 2012 Boston Marathon. He was recently featured in Sheridan’s alumni magazine, Ovation. Click here to read the full story and to see a video of Josh training.

Joel Dembe is the No. 1 ranked wheelchair tennis player in Canada, and a London 2012 Paralympian.  In 2011, he was named Canada’s Male Wheelchair Athlete of the Year.  Joel graduated from the Marketing Management program in 2008.

PANAMANIA

Meaghan Ogilvie, a 2003 applied photography graduate, is one of 27 distinguished artists commissioned by PANAMANIA, the TORONTO 2015 arts and culture festival.  Her series Requiem of Water will be unveiled on July 13 at Toronto’s Brookfield Place.

Keeping athletes in the game

Sheridan’s renowned Bachelor of Athletic Therapy program has produced countless certified athletic therapists who are dedicated to helping athletes, professional and amateur alike, deal with sports injuries and return to play as soon and safely as possible.  Sheridan faculty and alumni have a long tradition of volunteering at the Pan Am and Parapan Games, Olympics, and other international sporting events.  TORONTO 2015 is no exception.

Amanda Halls and Nicole DiFilippo are the Director and Manager, respectively, of Sheridan’s Athletic Therapy Clinic.  Halls will be supporting the outdoor field hockey teams, while DiFilippo will be working with the water polo teams.  “It’s my first Games of this magnitude,” says Halls.  “I think it’s important to give back to the sporting community that has given me so much.”  Twenty-five additional Athletic Therapy alumni are lending their expertise to TORONTO 2015, in sports ranging from basketball and baseball, rugby and soccer to equestrian and combat sports, to name a few.

Read more about Sheridan alumni involved in the Games in the latest edition of Ovation.

Mississauga City Council recently approved a new by-law making Scholars’ Green Park, which is adjacent to the Hazel McCallion Campus, a smoke-free space. The by-law, which takes effect on August 1, 2015, prohibits smoking tobacco-based products such as cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos and the use of tobacco in water pipes.

The City enacted the by-law in an effort to provide a healthier environment for students, employees and other users of the park.  Scholars’ Green Phase II, scheduled to open in 2017, will also be a smoke-free park.  The by-law builds on similar legislation enacted by the City which has made arenas, parks and other public spaces smoke-free.

For more information, visit City of Mississauga Smoking By-Law.

IT Security Reminder: Always be Careful with Email Attachments

$

0

While email attachments are a popular and convenient way to send documents, they are also a common source of viruses. Use caution when opening attachments, even if they appear to have been sent by someone you know.

Spam emails with attachments containing malware (i.e. computer viruses) can come from anyone, including your coworkers, family, and friends. These malicious file attachments may pretend to be anything, including work documents, family photos, voicemail messages, or fax messages. It is therefore important to always be careful with email attachments, especially if:

  • you are not expecting the email
  • the email is sent to a large number of recipients
  • the attachment has a .zip and/or .exe file extension

If you receive a suspicious email to your Sheridan account, please do NOT open the attachment. Contact the IT Service Desk first. We will be happy to take a look at the email to determine its legitimacy. As well, if the email is spam and is coming from someone you know at Sheridan, we will then be able to follow up with that person to resolve the issue with their account and/or computer.

When in doubt contact servicedesk@sheridancollege.ca for a second opinion.

celebrate freedom

This coming long weekend, the work of Sheridan students will be featured at the Emancipation Day Family Picnic, an event sponsored by the Oakville Museum commemorating August 1, 1834: the day slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire.

In addition to games, drum circles and other fun activities, the event will feature two exhibitions by Sheridan students. The first is a poster presentation exhibit by students from the General Education elective, Canada in the Making: Understanding Canadian History. The posters cover a wide variety of topics in Canadian Black History, including the Underground Railroad, Black Settlement in Ontario, the War of 1812’s Coloured Corps, Black Loyalists, as well as profiles of such notables as Harriet Tubman and Mathieu deCosta. The second exhibition is a gallery of original art work created as the visual component to a research-based creative assignment in the Degree Breadth elective, Anthropology of Music.  These creative works are unique interpretations of Jazz that reflect the defining nature of this music as a symbol of human global thought and metaphors for democracy, freedom of expression, and tolerance.

This free, family-friendly event celebrating Oakville’s role in the Underground Railroad will be held on Monday, August 3rd from 1-4pm at the Oakville Museum located at 8 Navy Street. For more information, please see http://www.oakville.ca/museum/programs-events.html and don’t forget to bring a picnic lunch and a lawn chair!

The Office of the Registrar bid a fond farewell on July 31 to Assistant to the Registrar Carrie Hinich. Carrie, who has been with the OTR for two short years, has assumed a new role with the Human Resources Department at the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board.  We will miss Carrie’s warm approach with students!

We are actively recruiting for a replacement for this position; in the interim, I ask that any queries that would have been sent to Carrie  are forwarded to me directly.
