Microsoft has released its new operating system, Windows 10, on July 29, 2015 as a free upgrade to qualified users. Please note: Windows 10 will not be supported at Sheridan for the start of the 2015 Fall term.

Non-support means:

  • Inability to download Sheridan applications from Access Sheridan
  • Inability to print at Sheridan
  • Technical support not available for Windows 10 installations including connection to the WiFi (wireless network)

The Sheridan community is advised that Windows 7 continues to be the supported platform in all teaching and learning spaces as well as on all employees’ technological platforms.

Students registered in mobile programs can expect support for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 for the start of the Fall term. Windows 10 will not be supported.

Sheridan IT will work diligently throughout the Fall term on testing over 60 academic applications, printing and other academic and administrative software packages and configurations on Windows 10 platform. The results of this testing will drive the levels of support for Windows 10 beginning in the Winter term – January 2016.

Please look for our future communications around the availability and support for Windows 10.

Please send us your questions, comments and feedback by contacting the IT Service Desk servicedesk@sheridancollege.ca

A team of Sheridan students took first place in the re-engineered products category at the IAM3D Challenge held on August 2 in Boston. Ryan Vieira and Kristoffer Pascual received the award for their work in developing an audible hockey puck for blind and visually impaired athletes.  The team was mentored by faculty advisor Dr. Amir Al-Mohammedi.

The puck is designed with internal sound frequency that allows all team members to be aware of the puck’s location, and to have more movement and freedom on the ice to fully experience the sport. Vieira and Pascual went through two prototypes before landing on the final design, which was produced in the 3D printing lab at Sheridan.

The IAM3D Challenge is sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).  It provides mechanical and multi-disciplinary undergraduate students around the world the opportunity to re-engineer existing products or create new designs that minimize energy consumption and/or improve energy efficiency.  Four Sheridan teams were among the 20 finalists in this year’s challenge, which also featured competitors from the United States, India, Columbia and Mexico.

Below is a link to a Canadian Press story about the project which received wide circulation ahead of Sunday’s competition:

It is with mixed emotions that I inform you that Chris Ali has decided to resign from his role as a Records Specialist at the Trafalgar Campus and will be moving on to further his career path outside of Sheridan.

Chris has spent the majority of his adult life dedicated to servicing the Sheridan community, first as president of the Sheridan Student Union, later with the International Office, and most recently within the Office of the Registrar. For those of you unfamiliar with Chris’ distinguished role within the Sheridan community, I invite you to review his alumni profile here:

https://www.sheridancollege.ca/alumni/profiles/chris-ali.aspx

While his dedication to student success and service, as well as his insightful problem solving will truly be missed, I have no doubt that these skills, amongst others, along with his friendly, professional demeanor, will serve Chris well as he seeks to realize his career aspirations.

Chris’ last day in the Trafalgar OTR will be August 7, so please feel free to drop him a line and join me in wishing him all the best in his future endeavours.

After 20 years as a tremendously valued Sheridan employee, and 15 years in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design, Lisa Todd will retire from Sheridan as a full-time employee on August 28, 2015.

Fortunately for Sheridan, Lisa has decided to continue with part-time work: she has  been recruited as the administrative assistant for the Faculty Union office. This is very fitting, since in her fifteen years as executive assistant to two deans in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design, Lisa has become a beloved figure for all of our faculty.

Lisa will be greatly missed. We wish her every success in her next chapter.

Library and Learning Services (LLS) is pleased to announce that Holly Ashbourne assumed the role of Emerging Technologies and FAST Liaison Librarian on August 1, 2015 as Kathleen Oakey has moved into the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Liaison Librarian position.

Holly has gained a wide range of experience in various roles she has held with LLS over the years. Since 2009, Holly has worked as a Library Technician and Clerk with Sheridan. In those roles, Holly has developed and maintained positive relationships with students, faculty, and other members of the Sheridan community. To support the work of Program Coordinators and Academic Advisors, there is a team of Student Advisors who are also a resource to students. Student Advisors conduct developmental advising in person, by phone and through email. These conversations are structured so that they can listen to the student’s situation, answer their questions and discuss possible supports and strategies.

Student Advisor sessions relating to Academic Probation include (however, are not limited to):

  • a clarification of the Academic Probation standing, probation requirements and possible implications
  • a discussion about available options (i.e. program change)
  • referrals to appropriate on-campus supports and services
  • an individualized action plan, with a strategy for student success

Students with a May Not Continue standing may also benefit from a developmental advising session. Student Advisors listen to the student’s situation, discuss possible options and outline next steps in a tailored action plan. As a starting point, students with a May Not Continue standing may be referred to the following virtual URL:  manageyouracademics.sheridancollege.ca.

Student Advisement is open Monday to Friday, 8am – 5pm.  We are located in the Student Service Centre, Room B230 at Davis, Room B104 at Trafalgar, and at the Welcome Desk at HMC. After hours, students and staff are welcome to e-mail questions to askanadvisor@sheridancollege.ca
