I’m very pleased to welcome Desiree Thyme as the new Media Production Coordinator for the Department of Film, Television and Journalism.

Desiree is a familiar face to many of us, having taught television production part-time with the Media Arts program since 2003. A Sheridan Media Arts graduate, Desiree brings over 20 years of front-line production management experience in both live television programs and post-produced series where she honed exceptional organizational skills and the ability to maintain a sense of humour under tight deadlines.

As a valued member of our faculty team in Media Arts, Desiree has been instrumental in our collaborative development processes for the television production component of the new Bachelor of Film and Television curriculum. Her attention to detail and clear focus, coupled with a warm and supportive communication style, created an exceptional combination for teaching and learning that always rendered Desiree a favourite of students.

The Media Production Coordinator is a new role in our effort to formalize and expand the vital experiential learning elements of television, film and journalism production curricula at Sheridan. Our goal is to create opportunities for students beyond the classroom to maximize their time in the field to practice their chosen professional crafts in a safe, supported and scaffolded environment toward eventual independence and leadership. The Media Production Coordinator will anchor this activity, working in collaboration with students, technologists, faculty, Sheridan Production House and other college and external stakeholders to coordinate, catalogue and communicate student media production at Sheridan.

Please join me in welcoming Desiree to this exciting new role!

– Maija Saari
Associate Dean of Film, Television and Journalism

I am pleased to announce two appointments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences effective September 1. I am delighted to share that Sean McNabney has accepted the position of Associate Dean, School of Humanities and Creativity. Sean has provided exemplary leadership to the School over the past two years as the Acting Associate Dean, and will be taking on the role on a permanent basis. Sean joined Sheridan as a faculty member in 2008 and has taught Communications courses, literary studies electives, and has served as Coordinator in three separate portfolios: English Communications, General Education, and Degree Breadth. A member of College Council from 2010-2013, he served as the Council’s Chair for the 2012-2013 academic year; he has also been a member of the FHASS’ Local Academic Council since 2011 and is currently the Chair of the Program Quality Assurance subcommittee of the LAC.

Sean holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Western Ontario, where he also completed his Master of Arts degree with a focus on the study of American Literature. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at York University, where he continues to focus on his research interests in the Western and Detective Fiction genres, gender and cultural studies, historiography, creativity, and narrativity.

It is also a great pleasure to announce that Stephanie Samboo has accepted the position of Associate Dean, School of Communication and Literary Studies. Stephanie has led the School over the past 15 months with great success, and I am delighted that she will continue to provide leadership in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Stephanie joined Sheridan as a faculty member in 2004, and has served in the capacity of Coordinator of ESL and, subsequently, of English Communication. She was one of the key members involved in the start-up of the Learning Centre at Sheridan in 2011, and has been an active member of Sheridan’s Senate, of the Academic Pathways Standing Committee of the Senate, of FHASS’s LAC, among others. Stephanie is currently the Chair of FHASS’ Pathways and Academic Partnerships subcommittee of the LAC.

Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts (English Studies) from the National University of Singapore. She is also TESL (Teaching English as Second Language) certified, a CLBPT (Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test) assessor and became a certified ISW (Instructional Skills Workshop) facilitator in April 2013. Her research interests include Language Acquisition, Intercultural Rhetoric, Composition Pedagogy and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Stephanie is currently pursuing her PhD in English with a focus on Intercultural Rhetoric at the University of Waterloo.

Staffing announcement: Academic reorganization

$

On August 28, Bill Holmes will be leaving Sheridan to assume new responsibilities as the Dean of the Faculty of Management at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC.  This is a wonderful opportunity for Bill to pursue his professional goals and for his family to return to the West coast and its myriad attractions. Royal Roads’ gain is our loss – that being said, I wish Bill every success in his future as an academic leader and will miss his counsel and support.

With the departure of Bill, I have had to make some changes to ensure that his responsibilities as Vice Provost are delegated and that the short-term and long-term interests of Sheridan are clearly addressed.  In order to consider our long-term needs in light of our Vision, Mission, Self Study process and creation of the next iteration of the Academic Innovation Strategy, I am putting a short-term (12 to 18 months) structure in place so that we can meet our collective responsibilities while stepping back to consider our long-term needs.

  • Melanie Spence-Ariemma will retain her present responsibilities as Associate Vice President, Academic Quality and will assume some of Bill’s present portfolio as Acting Vice Provost. Postsecondary Faculty Deans, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Library and Learning Services and Centre for People and Organizational Development will report through Melanie.
  • Has Malik is assuming a new role as Interim Associate Vice President, Academic Resource Planning and Allocation/Faculty of Continuing and Professional Studies. Has will continue to provide leadership to the Faculty of Continuing and Professional Studies (FCAPS).
  • Yael Katz, Dean of the Institute for Creativity and the Creative Campus will add to her responsibilities as the Acting Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHASS).
  • Brian Jervis will retain the leadership for the academic projects in his portfolio as Director of the Academic Computing Integration Strategy. He will also serve as the Interim Associate Vice President, Scholarship, Research and Creative Activities (SRCA) with Dr. Darren Lawless, Dean of  Research, Mark Chapman, Director of Institutional Research, Dr. Mardy Frazer, SRCA Special Advisor, and John Helliker, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Director of SIRT/SirtNet  reporting through him.

Please join me in welcoming this new team as it assumes its new roles and we work together towards a bright future for Sheridan. The revised organizational chart is attached for your information.
