On October 26th, the Skills Training Centre in partnership with School College Work Initiative hosted 120 high school counsellors and teachers, along with college faculty and staff from across the GTA to learn more about Apprenticeship.

The Apprenticeship Forum allows college faculty and secondary teachers to review best practices, and focus on strategizes to select the right candidates for the Level 1 Apprenticeship programs.  At Sheridan, students are able to achieve their Level 1 certification in Electrical as well as 2 dual credits while completing their Ontario Secondary School diploma.

The day also included a presentation from the Ontario College of Trades and how they also support the training of these students.  School boards and colleges had an opportunity to discuss student selection, retention and success in these programs. Mark Bodrozic and Dave Fraser, STC faculty members participated in the college session and provided insight into Sheridan’s experience with the Level 1 Electrical program.

The delegates also had a guided tour of the Skills Training Centre and were impressed with the facilities and programs that Sheridan offers.  It was an excellent opportunity to learn, network and share the opportunities in the skilled trades for young people.
