One of the warmest celebrations of the year was even warmer at Sheridan! More than 200 Chinese students gathered at the Trafalgar Cafeteria on February 1 to welcome the Year of the Pig. Red decorations adorned the room, and large meals of rice, noodles and dumplings were served.
The celebration started with recognition of people who were born in the Year of the Pig. In traditional Chinese culture, pigs are indispensable properties to families and thus considered to be symbols of wealth. According to Chinese astrological predictions, the year of the Earth Pig 2019 is an auspicious year because the Pig attracts success in all spheres of life.
Ryan Piper, Vice President, Human Resources, gave New Year’s greetings and best wishes on behalf of Sheridan, and Mike Allcott, Dean, International, joined the crowd and congratulated students on their special traditional and cultural occasion. International Centre staff also extended their New Year’s greetings and best wishes to the students.
“Sheridan is proud to include so many students from China, and students who have Chinese heritage,” says Mike Allcott. “We learn from their experiences, perspectives and knowledge so we are able to celebrate the world with them.”
“What a warm celebration in a cold Canadian winter,” said Yuming Liu, a first-year student in Visual Merchandising Arts. “The food, the riddles, the music and songs; everything makes me feel like I am at home. I hope this celebration brings us a new year with great achievement and growth.”
